thinnest folding phone honor magic v2

HONOR, the renowned smartphone manufacturer, has unveiled its latest innovation, the world’s first thinnest folding phone: HONOR Magic V2 launched in China recently. This device is being hailed as the most delicate and lightest book-style foldable smartphone to date with a thickness of just 4.7mm when unfolded and 9.9mm when folded shut. Additionally, it weighs 231g, less than those competitors. Utilizing ‘proprietary steel‘ and a titanium hinge helps to do this, at least in part.

The HONOR Magic V2 is expected to redefine industry benchmarks with its significant improvements across form factor, battery, display, and user experience aspects. When I first held it in my hand, I was astounded by how thin it was and how little heavier it was than the majority of the top smartphones currently available.

Honor still manages to use the best of the best processor in it despite its thinner and compact body. The main component is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Even though the outside panel can get much brighter than the inner one, both screens have high resolutions and 120Hz refresh rates. Along with it, there is a competing camera configuration with a telephoto lens. Additionally, a 5,000mAh battery that has no business fitting into a phone this little is included, as if all of this weren’t absurd enough.

HONOR Magic V2 In-hand Impression

The Magic V2 is one of the very few devices—out of the numerous foldables and phones I’ve used —that actually caused me to stop and gaze at it with surprise when I first picked it up. It would be virtually hard to tell that it folds if you couldn’t see the hinge and the two frames on the opposite side. Being able to flip open to reveal a larger screen within is truly wonderful.

In its unfolded condition, it seems to be comfortable to hold and use for a longer period of time with very few compromises (no wireless charging, no IP certification), and when you need it, you can unfold it to get a huge tablet-like display for greater work or video consumption. Indeed, it’s the best of both worlds.

For photography, the Honor Magic V2 boasts a triple rear camera setup that consists of a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 20MP telephoto lens with 2.5x optical zoom. There are also two 16MP selfie cameras on both screens. The device packs a 5,000mAh battery that supports 66W fast charging via USB-C.

When HONOR Magic V2 Is Launching Globally?

The device was first launched in China in July 2023, but many global consumers have been eagerly waiting for its international release. So, when can we expect to see the Honor Magic V2 in other markets?

The Honor Magic V2 is undoubtedly an impressive foldable smartphone that offers a sleek design, a smooth display, and capable hardware. However, global consumers will have to wait for a few more months before they can get their hands on it.

According to Honor, the global launch of the Magic V2 will take place in Q1 2024, which means there will be a gap of at least six months between the Chinese and international versions. The company has also confirmed that the foldable phone will be available in select European and Latin American countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland, UK, and more. However, the pricing details for these regions have not been revealed yet.

HONOR Magic V2 Vs Samsun Galaxy Z Fold 5

Design

The Honor Magic V2 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 both have a similar design of a book-like foldable phone with an external screen and an internal screen. However, there are some differences in their dimensions, weight, and materials. The Honor Magic V2 has a 6.76-inch external screen and an 8.01-inch internal screen, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 6.2-inch external screen and a 7.6-inch internal screen.

The Honor Magic V2 is slightly larger and heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, measuring 161.8 x 145.8 x 8.2 mm and weighing 295 g, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 158.2 x 128.1 x 6.4 mm and 271 g. The Honor Magic V2 also has a more premium feel, as it is made of titanium alloy and ceramic glass, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is made of aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus.

Performance

Both foldable phones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which is one of the most powerful chipsets available for Android devices. They also have 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of internal storage options.

However, the Honor Magic V2 has an edge over the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in terms of software, as it runs on the HarmonyOS 2.0 operating system, which is optimized for foldable devices and offers a seamless transition between the external and internal screens. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 runs on the Android 11 operating system with Samsung’s One UI 3.1 skin on top, which is not as smooth or intuitive as HarmonyOS 2.0.

Camera

The camera department is where the Galaxy Z Fold 5 shines over the Honor Magic V2, as it has a more versatile and impressive camera setup. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a triple rear camera system consisting of a 12 MP wide-angle lens, a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens with a 123-degree field of view. It also has a 10 MP selfie camera on the external screen and a 4 MP under-display camera on the internal screen.
